Parents have a legal obligation to financially support their children regardless of whether the parents are divorced, legally separated, were never married or are presently living apart.
The amount of child support paid depends on the total amount of combined parental income and is calculated by the New York State Child Support Standards Chart. Typically, the percentage of child support paid is broken down as follows:
One Child = 17%
Two Children = 25%
Three Children = 29%
Four Children = 31%
Five or More Children = No less than 35%
